I've you've used BIND much at all and are familair with DNS and how it works a little, and have just read the install, readme, etc. files, you probably won't get much out of this book. BIND has a lot of options and there's a lot to discuss, but this book just covered a lot of basics over a lot of pages. It may be a good source for learning, but I wasn't reading it to learn from start.

I would say this is one of the very best DNS and BIND books out there although it is by no means for a DNS beginner. It covers alot of the general aspects of BIND but you definitely need a pretty good understanding of how the domain name system works. It is straight and to the point but does lack in some areas as far as errors that you run across and practical solutions that you often run into running a dns server.

I like the book in question. It covers several fields of DNS and BIND administrating not seen in other books. It also cover advanced fields like for example DDNS. It is clear that the writer knows what he is talking about.

I feel that the book is not for the first-timer in DNS, although it gives a good overview of those items too. You should know a little, and then this book explains why things are the way they are and how to fix your many errors... For people who have looked at DNS, maybe dabbled a litte, it is a great way to learn it the proper way.

Sadly, the Que-layout isn't up to O'Reilly standard, but if you ignore that, it is a really good book.

After struggling for two weeks trying to figure out Linux Server setups (specifically DNS) I got this book. This was the third book I bought (the other two just confused me more) and I wish I bought it first. It is clear and concise with good examples. It is readable and not just DBA-jargon and for once someone understood that if you are going to buy a book on how to set up a DNS, It means that you most probably are not familiar with all the little hidden details that needs to be remembered along the lines.

I would suggest this book to everyone, from the first-timers (newbies?) to the more proficient webmaster looking for some more internet security!

This is a great DNS book - to rival the DNS and Bind book by O'Reilly. Like the Bind book, this one gives a basic understanding of how DNS works, but it explains it in terms of Windows 2000 rather than Unix like the O'Reilly book. It gives some great practical examples. I work in customer support, supporting network and system administrators and every customer who calls with a DNS question, I recommend this book.

One review in Amazon said it doesn't do a good job of explaining Active Directory - but AD is not in the realm of DNS - you need other sources to see how AD works.


 All you need to know about Windows 2000 DNS, May 20, 2000

This book does an excellent job of covering Microsoft's latest version of DNS. The book covers many of the details of DNS services from the foundations of DNS to the implementation as put forth by Microsoft. A certain amount of knowledge about Windows 2000 and Active Directory is required to follow much of the book, but this is to be expected (and rightfully so) from a specialty book.

Successful Windows 2000 deployments, and Active Directory implementations, will require a solid DNS solution. This book provides all the information needed to successfully deploy Windows 2000 DNS, including integration with existing DNS servers.

The authors provide helpful guidelines for "best practices" and system maintenance issues. They also cover legacy support issues for WINS and other "downlevel" situations.

This book is a very complete reference and guide to understanding the importance of DNS to the Windows 2000 system administrator. It would be an excellent addition to any System Administrator's reference library.
