[March 22, 1999] KOffice
The K Desktop Environment (KDE) already enjoys immense popularity among UnixTM and LinuxTM users seeking a complete, stable, user-friendly and free graphical desktop environment. The only significant omission from the KDE package has been a modern office suite. But the diligent efforts of a dedicated team of KDE developers is rapidly driving KDE to soon reach this watershed as well. The result of their dedicated hacking is the KDE Office Suite (KOffice), which presently consists of a spreadsheet (KSpread), a presentation application (KPresenter), a FrameMaker-like wordprocessor (KWord), a vector drawing program (KIllustrator), a chart and diagram application (KDiagram), a formula editor (KFormula), a simple image viewer (KImage) and an HTML rendering program (KoHTML). These applications use the KDE libraries, share the KDE look and adhere to the KDE guidelines, and as such, are fully integrated into KDE. With the contribution of the KOM/OpenParts object model, the KDE Office Suite takes KDE a large step ahead and introduces a whole new world of opportunities not only for KDE users, but to the free software community as a whole.
Obviously an office suite cannot be developed overnight, and KOffice will not be fully functional for some time. However, substantial parts of KOffice are already quite usable, and considering their rapid rate of development, KOffice is worth a look now!
This article will first describe the KOffice object model -- KOM/OpenParts. The impatient can skip directly to the description of the apps
