Hummingbird component

Estimated number of users (out of 389) Free analog Comment
Hummingbird neighborhood 70% none

This component provides convenient access to the servers with which the user works frequently; it's not the core functionality but is very important for nontechnical users.

HostExplorer VT 60% Teraterm, Putty

Teraterm has generally superior functionality; some people prefer Putty which is a preinstalled application

Hummingbird FTP 20% ???

WS-FTP is similar but cheaper commercial applications and costs approximately 18 euros ($30) per seat. One time licensing cost for 20% of users, assuming $30 per user is approximately $2500. For all users it will be ~$12K

Exceed  X11 60% Cygwin

Cygwin works well when exporting display from remote servers used by Unix group. But devil is in details, especially for DCS systems (see Corey Clingo letter); Open question is how to emulate the way the DCS users launch those applications (usually via rexec functionality of Exceed Xstart). See Xstart/Session section below...

I would take special measures to preserve good will on the part of this category of users

Exceed  XDMCP unclear; at least one ???

Current version of Cygwin has problem supporting XDMCP (hang keyboard)

Exceed Xstart/Xsession 60% custom bash scripts ???

Cygwin works within a separate emulation layer provided by cygwin1.dll so providing icons for applications requires creation of special bash scripts which need to be manually associated with icons, manually created for each and every server.

NFS Support unclear VMWare player
