Norton Ghost Tips
Before using Ghost from Windows to perform a cloning operation, run LiveUpdate
to obtain the latest update to Ghost. Update usually resolves some problems that
may be encountered when Ghost restarts the computer into the Ghost Virtual Boot
Partition or uses a USB or Firewire connection. See the document
Updates to Norton Ghost 2003. The latest Ghost 2003 files should have May 28
date of creation.
- After creation of a bootable PC DOS diskette you can put Volkov commander
on it. That increase the flexibility of using this diskette in most situations.
You can also create several boot disks with different sets of drivers on each.
See the document
How to choose a type of boot disk or boot image.
- When you clone directly from one disk to another, the final steps depend
on how you will use the destination disk. See the Symantec document
How to perform a Disk to Disk clone.
- Ghost's ability to save an image file to various types of local devices
depends on your Ghost version, the device type, and sometimes the device's make
and model. See the document
Ghost compatibility. The "Ghost compatibility" document provides links to
other documents that provide specific compatibility information for various
hardware devices, operating systems, file systems, other programs, and so on.
- Norton Ghost 2003 can save a disk image file or partition image file directly
to most models of USB drives. See
When you use Ghost to create a disk image file or partition image file and
save the file to a hard disk on the local computer, Ghost can save a disk
image file to a different disk on the same computer but not to the same disk.
Ghost can save a partition image file to a different partition on the
same computer but not to the same partition. For other information on this process,
see the document
How to create an image of a drive and save it on a different local drive.

Old News ;-)
[Feb 14, 2006] You do not need Ghost 2003 to occupy tray as this program is not
often used. To remove it go to options and uncheck "Show Ghost on start-up
button".
[Feb 14 2006] It is close to suicide to try to use Ghost 2003 to write
directly to CD or DVD. If you need this you this function need to upgrade
to later versions. Meanwhile you can speed up operation by first writing image
to the disk and then burning CD or DVD with a regular burning program. If you want
Ghost to save the disk image file or partition image file directly to a CD-R or
CD-RW drive, first verify that your CD-R/RW device is on the list of tested drives.
See the document
Ghost 2003 compatibility with CD-R and CD-RW drives. For more information on
this process, see the following documents:
