One of best programmable keypads on the market is Logitech G13 Programmable Gameboard with LCD Display

It can be used with Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000

The G4, G10, G11, G12 keys are concave for your finger tips, which is nice,  The G15 key (the first one in the 3rd row) acts like a shift key and the G20 (first key in the 4th row) is shaped like a CTRL key on a standard keyboard. The button near the joystick would be like a spacebar. However, in the beginning, there is a definitely a slight learning curve to getting used to the feel of this board.

The device requires Logitech Gaming Software. The way the device works is that the software allows you to set up profiles for your games. It is identical to creation of profiles for Logitech G510s gaming keyboard

The USB Numeric Keypad with 2-port Hub is ideal for the mobile user either at home or in the office. Offering two products in one it has all the functionality of a standard keypad plus provides two USB 1.1 ports for additional accessories. The low profile keys are comfortable, easy to use and the perfect complement to your notebook for anyone working on spreadsheets, accounting or financial applications.

Some of my custom macros written with Autoit/Autohotkey did not function properly with this unit. - I will update when I look into this further.

I needed a usb numeric keypad for my MacBook Pro since the newer models lack the built-in keypad via a Function key. The Logitech Cordless Number Pad for Notebooks claims compatibility but never actually followed through with it, and the Toshiba PA1390U-1NKP Slim USB Numeric Keypad with 2-Port USB Hub does work for basic data entry but fails to differentiate between "Return" and "Enter", a negligible glitch for data entry purposes, but a real killer for applications like Sibelius which have two different actions associated with "Return" and "Enter" respectively.

However, this keypad by Genovation actually works on Mac. Just like other keypad peripherals, when you plug it in it will not be recognized by OS X, but you can manually select United States ANSI and the keypad will work. If you keep getting beeps when you press buttons, toggle NumLock a couple of times. I had to switch around a couple shortcuts in Sibelius so it would match the Windows-style layout of the keypad, but that was easy and now it works perfectly. Highly recommended for Sibelius and Mac users.

Surprisingly wonderful for gamers August 5, 2006

By MammonLord

This device, though intended for notebook number crunchers, is worth it's weight in gold to gamers. It's surprisingly liberating to move away from the WASD control scheme and use this nifty little device instead. Other brand devices require a driver (and may be better suited to notebook use) but this ugly little gray box plugs straight in and just works - perfect for gaming. It's also much sturdier than many competitors and has full-size, full-range keys (not notebook style flat keys).
