Script is broken: incomplete LSB comment, missing `Required-Start:' entry

Admin Horror Stories

Etc

There are two widespread urban myth about init scripts. The first is that scripts on lower runlevels are executed before scripts on higher runlevel. For example if we go to level 5 that means that scripts on level 3 will be executed. This is not true -- each runlevel is completely autonomous and sequence of runlevel is poorly logical. Only scripts belonging to particular runlevel are executed.

When you look at other scripts in /etc/init.d/, you may notice that they start with a specific section, so called LSB Comment Conventions for Init Scripts.  It is explained very well in openSUSEPackaging init scripts - openSUSE document.  Minimal LSB comment section for init scripts looks like:

### BEGIN INIT INFO
# Provides: sendmail postfix
# Required-Start: $network $named $syslog $time
# Should-Start: cyrus ldap ypbind openslp
# Required-Stop:
# Default-Start: 3 5
# Default-Stop:
# Description: start the Postfix MTA
### END INIT INFO

Minimal content needs just the name of the script, required runlevels and short description.

### BEGIN INIT INFO
# Provides:
# Required-Start: snort
# Required-Stop:
# Default-Start: 3 5
# Default-Stop:
# Short-Description: run snort.
# Description:
### END INIT INFO

Suse 11 SP 2 is pretty capricious as for content of this section and you often encounter errors such as:

insserv: script ovpa is broken: incomplete LSB comment.

Special case of  /etc/init.d/jexec

The error is in the sun jexec init script. As a result of this error chkconfig became inoperative: you can't add or remove particular daemon from assigned runlevels:

Workaround (see Support error running chkconfig)

  1. Make a backup of /etc/init.d/jexec
  2. Add the following line:
    # Required-Stop:
    after this existing line:  # Required-Start: $local_fs

Debian User Forums View topic - [SOLVED] insserv warning when upgrading virtualbox

by DanneStrat " 2011-08-18 13:43

Hi.

Yesterday when i ran an upgrade in squeeze, there was an updated virtualbox package.
When the upgrade of virtualbox finished, I got a warning like this one "insserv: warning: current stop runlevel(s) (1) of script `vboxdrv' overwrites defaults (0 1 6)."
From my understanding, this is not critical by any means, but I would like to know a little about why this happens and if there's something you should do when it does.
By the way, I get virtualbox from the "virtualbox.org" repository for squeeze.

Thanks.

Currently the system only has a link to stop the service in /etc/rc1.d/
you can see this by running the following:
Code: Select all
ls -l /etc/rc0.d/|grep vboxdrv
ls -l /etc/rc1.d/|grep vboxdrv
ls -l /etc/rc6.d/|grep vboxdrv

The vboxdrv script in init.d has LSB headers that include:

Code: Select all
# Default-Stop: 0 1 6

So the LSB headers are telling the system the the default stop levels are 0, 1, and 6. Hence the conflict. It's possible (probable) that the LSB headers were changed by a package upgrade to virtualbox and that at one point they did only call for a stop in run level 1.

To fix it you can run the following, as root:

Code: Select all
insserv -d /etc/init.d/vboxdrv

After running that if you re-issue the ls commands above you'll see that an entry has been created for all 3 runlevels. See man insserv for more.
